The First Election on the Long Voyage

For two hundred years the ship's captain has never been challenged. This year someone is running.

The Perihelion left Earth two hundred and eleven years ago and will not arrive for another ninety. Every captain has been chosen by the last, every vote unanimous, every term for life. Then the challenger filed papers, the archivist found the clause that says it is allowed, and nine thousand people who have never had a choice discovered they have opinions. With the hydroponics harvest failing and the systems technician finding things in the ship's logs nobody was meant to see, the first real election in the ship's history has thirty days to run, and every one of them will matter.
