The last plane out left in February. The next one comes in October. Somebody on the station is lying about what they found in the ice.
Cold Harbor Station sits on the edge of the Antarctic plateau with twelve people wintering over and no way out until spring. Six weeks into the dark, a drill core comes up with something frozen inside it, the station's long-range radio fails the same night, and a fuel line is found cut. The station chief wants calm, the glaciologist wants the core, the medic has noticed symptoms nobody can explain, the radio operator is hearing signals that should not be there, and the pilot is the only one who can fly, if anyone could survive the flight. Nobody is coming. Whatever happens at Cold Harbor will happen to the people already there.
5 roles. You take one; your friends take the rest, and the narrator plays any left over. Anyone can bring a character of their own into a role instead.
A veteran polar logistician running her sixth winter-over, who has never lost anyone and has started to count.
A glaciologist whose deep drilling project brought up something that does not belong in million-year-old ice.
The station's only doctor, an emergency physician who signed up for a quiet winter and has three patients with symptoms she cannot name.
A taciturn radio operator who has kept the station's communications running for three winters and is now hearing a signal from inside the ice.
The station's bush pilot, stuck on the ground for the winter with a small plane that could just about fly in an emergency, if anyone were mad enough.
